A little catching up...

Sorry my blogging has been so sparce. The internet tends to be so slow it wear's out my patience. I've been emailing my family faithfully each night, but most of the time that's about all the patience I seem to muster. To reward you all for waiting oh so kindly, I have pictures! They're kind of random though, since I haven't been able to post any yet it's just a mix a various places I've been and things I've done so far. I miss everyone terribly, and I very much miss my dear Cincy, but I am adjusting and doing alright.

Yesterday was interesting in the fact that I was sick. Thankfully it was the first time since I've been here, but it seems that something was/is going around. Emma, April and Joel's oldest at 3 yrs. old I believe, was sick along with me, so we kind of kept each other company. We both crashed on her parents bed since the downstairs is being worked on.
They're having all the electric put into the walls, instead of it being run outside of them. This is a much bigger undertaking than it sounds. It requires men chipping away the cement behind each section of electric, putting it in, chipping away all the old "floating" on the walls, and then sanding everything down, refinishing the cement, and then painting. I think I got it all in there...anyway, it's much more involved than that, but to sum things up, they're doing this throughout two whole rooms downstairs, and parts of some others, which means that the entire lower level is now covered in layers of dust and dirt. It's working it's way upstairs too, but we're trying to fight it off. I, personally, can't wait to be able to clean it up...it's driving me crazy, as it is April. She's worked as a house keeper/babysitter before, and since that's what I do currently (minus the babysitting) we have an understanding about the clean up thing. In fact, we're hoping we can get started on it tomorrow.

Anyway, at this point in my stay I am offically the only house guest. The TLC team left Tues. I cried, but I'm doing alright now. And yes...that's kind of how I handle change...I'm just so great with it.

Today was fairly relaxed, but April and I did get to go out and visit a few families. She was excited about seeing one family in particular because she had great news for them. In a few weeks there's a family coming, from Cincy actually, that will be building this Haitian family a new home. This family is very poor, and when we went to see them today I realized how badly they need this blessing. They are currently living in a small, one room building that is made from stick and mud mostly. It has a patched together metal roof, but as far as the walls go, I could see through large holes in various places on them. They are in need, and were so excited to hear this good news.

Another thing that I was able to do today was to help take care of a malnurished infant. April's been trying to do all she can to see that this little boy lives, and he's still not in the clear. He's a twin, but his brother died due to birthing complications. His mother doesn't seem to be completely stable and April's worried about how she's caring for him, so she's requiring her to bring him to the clinic every day so they can help feed him and check up on him. He's only 3 pds, and they've had no luck getting him over that weight. I believe April told me he's about two months old, but I could be wrong on that. I'll try to double check. Anyway, the clinic isn't open on Fridays so April had the mother come to the compound today and I was in charge of feeding him. He was a hungry little bugger, so it didn't take me long to get him to eat the alotted amount. After I fed him, he was fast asleep and there was no waking him back up. If you think about it, remember to pray for this little guy, he's going to need all the help he can get.

Well, I'm going to call it a night. Take care, and leave me comments!

A lesson in humility

So today we did a varity of things, sanding cement walls and washing them down in order to paint them, various cleaning and kitchen organization, I slipped to the roof for a little r & r with the sun, and then after lunch/supper (they only do breakfast and a meal around 2:00pm here), the girls went to help April with her ladies meeting. She was doing a devotional having to do with being right with one another and wanted to use foot washing to explain how we must often humble ourselves before another to keep things in the right. I believe that's the gist of it anyway, it was in Creole of course, so I can't be certain.

The girls were asked to help by give the ladies petticures after the devotional. Def. of petticure in this context is, washing feet, sanding, lotioning, massaging, and spritzing w/perfume. Now, considering that some ppl aren't as fond of feet as others, April graciously offered us an out if we wanted it. We simply had to serve the ladies snacks and drinks while they had their feet washed. I chose the out.

That of course leads us to my lesson in humility. Once the ladies were told about what we were doing, they all wanted a chance to wash their friends feet, so their were plenty of ppl going at it. Once they finished each other's feet, however, they needed new victims...I'm just kidding about the victims thing. Of course one of them just had to ask to wash mine, and so, begining with me they washed all the feet of the girls there, including every one that did the serving instead of the feet washing. It took me off guard and really made me stop and think. Why couldn't I simply humble myself and wash a stranger's feet? They were practically jumping at the chance to wash mine (and no they were just that dirty!). I hope that next time, I can learn to be a little more Haitian in my approach...

Just so you know, it could be quite a while b/f I post pics. It's a little too complicated. I'll do my best to eventually though.

I made it to Port! (...in case you were wondering.)

Well, the internet here is officially slower than Kim Brown's driving. :) Sorry Kim. So, we'll see about how often I can post.

Anyway, I did make it in, and I've already got tons of pics to post, but don't have time tonight.

The main things to update so far are that, yes...it's hot. And yes...the driving is unlike anything I've ever seen...well besides my Dad's driving.

Catch you all soon hopefully, and keep praying for me! :)

Nerves, silence, and coffee...

I've been crazy nervous about this trip, thankfully God sent a friend along to help with that. I'll explain more on that later. My first flight was nice - quick and silent...my neighbor never said a word! Now I'm sitting in the DC airport waiting to board. My breakfast consists of a frappe and a cookie! :)

Just a little FYI:

Some of you may have heard that my camera, Doris bit the dust this year...and unfortunately I found out that she wasn't worth fixing due to the outrageous cost to do so. I was rather distraught about this, because how could I spend 6 wks in Haiti and not have any pics to show from my venture?!?

Well, thanks to some very generous giving(by various ppl), I was able to pay my expenses and then purchase a camera. I actually had ppl that specifically asked if I would put some of their money toward getting a camera, so it's been a real blessing to have this all work out. (Also, it's nice to still be a part of the Cannon [powershot] family...instead of the Fuji 24 shot club.)

I know that may not seem so big to some of you, but I was almost in tears thinking about it one day, and to the point of just wanting to buy some disposable cameras to take along -- that would've been a fun through back to about age 14.  =]

Anyway, hopefully I will now be able to post at least a few pics while I'm away. Thanks so much to those of you that made this possible! You'll def. be seeing some of the results at some point, even if it's after I'm back!
Oh, and if you care...this one's name is Dalton. It's def. a he...

Thanks for the support!

Hey all! I just wanted to say a huge thanks to those of you who have so generously supported my trip to Port Au Prince! I would not be going if it weren't for that support, so really - thank you.

Things are really coming together now and I'm getting excited(...and a bit nervous). I ask that you keep me in your prayers for the next few weeks, and especially on the 16th, which is when I'll be flying into Port.

Getting set up:

Just so you all know, this is the blog that I'll post pictures and updates to concerning my Haiti internship. I'm hoping to have access to do that while I'm actually in Haiti, but I have no idea what my schedule and access will be like, so no promises.

I will, however, promise to post when I get back for sure. Maybe a couple times between now and then too, just to fill you in on "the process".

Anyway, I'd love feed back once I'm able to post about my trip, so please leave comments. Oh, and keep me in your prayers -- thanks!
